Who says Science isn’t exciting?

Not Iain Roberts, a Phd student who is hurtling down the track at 85mph in the bobsled and skeleton world championships at Lake Placid this week with just a lycra suit for protection.

Iain, is competing in the skeleton bobsleigh and has built his own sled based on engineering and ice friction principles he has been studying for his Phd at Edinburgh University.

The mountains – as big as the Alps – are the last unexplored mountain range on Earth and lie 2.5 miles below the ice. The mission to uncover them was one of the most ambitious missions of International Polar Year and provides a spectacular finish to the project.
